Season-specific payment basis

No payout is reused across seasons. Premier League losses use that season's exact merit £ per place. Cup cases use the prize schedule applicable to that cup season. European cases use the economics of the European campaign actually missed, net of UEFA income actually received.

Premier League

For example, a one-place displacement in 2009/10 uses £800,424; the equivalent 2017/18 displacement uses £1,931,268. Each club-season is calculated independently.

Domestic cups

Only guaranteed progression economics are used. Earlier-round League Cup cases with no guaranteed prize remain £0; final cases use only winner-versus-runner-up incremental prize value.

Europe

European losses are dated to the end of the following missed UEFA campaign. This is deliberately conservative because many UEFA and matchday cash flows would have arrived earlier.

Future-value rate

Official Bank of England Bank Rate is used as the sterling time-value benchmark. Each interval between rate changes compounds at the rate applicable during that interval.

Formula

For each loss: 2026 FV = historical loss × product of the Bank Rate accumulation factors from the loss date to 5 October 2026. No single generic rate is imposed across 2010–2019 losses.

Why Bank Rate?

It is observable, UK-specific and conservative. CPI would measure purchasing power rather than opportunity cost; statutory judgment interest would embed a legal entitlement assumption; equity/WACC returns would be substantially more speculative.

Not legal interest

The 2026 uplift is an economic future-value view only. It is not a claim that Bank Rate, statutory interest or any particular damages interest rate would legally apply.

Historical sporting baseline

City's 2002/03–2007/08 average league finish was approximately 12th. The app permits 9th–15th sensitivity but keeps the central case at 12th.

League reconstruction

City is reinserted at the assumed rank, not removed. Only clubs between City's actual and assumed positions receive one-place merit uplift.

Netting

Every loss equals counterfactual economics minus actual economics already received. This applies to Premier League, UEFA and cup values.

Exclusions

Broadcast exposure remains unpriced. Speculative sponsorship, brand, fan-growth, player-value, managerial and transfer effects remain outside the core model. 2008/09 remains excluded.
